My journey into Examinations Under Oath (EUOs) began with a single phone call. It was 2004, and I picked up the phone to hear:
“Can I speak to Dan?”
The caller, Mike, worked for an insurance company and needed someone to handle an EUO file. At the time, I was primarily a litigator, handling very few EUOs. But I saw it as an opportunity to build a new client relationship.
The First EUO That Opened My Eyes
I took on the file, scheduled the EUO, conducted it, reported back, and wrapped it up. Simple. A week later, I was called to trial, but the case settled after jury selection—like most of them did. Frustrated by another missed opportunity to actually go to trial, I returned to my office and sorted through my mail.
That’s when I opened an envelope containing a check for $5,792. It was for the one EUO file I had handled. That’s when the thought hit me:
